The Houston Texans will be without second-year wide receiver Jaylin Noel for a longer period than initially anticipated as he recovers from a hamstring injury. This marks Noel's second injury during training camp, following a finger issue that he sustained prior to the start of camp at the end of July.
Details regarding the specific nature of the hamstring injury and a precise recovery timeline are not yet clear. However, Noel's absence is considered a notable loss for the Texans' wide receiver group, especially as he was expected to play a larger role this season after being removed from the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list earlier this month.
Noel, who was selected by the Texans in the third round of the 2023 draft, primarily contributed as a returner last season, recording 60 total returns, 26 receptions for nearly 300 yards, and two touchdowns. With veteran receiver Christian Kirk departing for the San Francisco 49ers, the Texans are looking for a new slot receiver, a role Noel was anticipated to fill effectively.
Currently, Xavier Hutchinson is positioned as the third wide receiver on the Texans' preseason depth chart. Noel's injury may delay his ability to compete for a higher spot until he fully recovers. Given the unpredictable nature of hamstring injuries, it is possible that his recovery could extend beyond the reported few weeks, coinciding with the start of the regular season in less than a month.
While Noel's injury raises concerns about his ability to build chemistry within the offense and maintain his explosiveness, the Texans do have depth in their receiving corps. Players like Lewis Bond and Jared Wayne have been making strong impressions during camp, and the return of Tank Dell could provide additional options.
