The SMU Mustangs are enhancing their wide receiver group with the addition of Jalen Hale, who transferred from Alabama, and Yannick Smith, a transfer from East Carolina. This move follows the departure of their leading receivers from last season, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively contributed more than 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns before their graduation.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with several key offensive players, including tight ends Matthew Hibner and RJ Maryland, as well as running backs TJ Harden and Chris Johnson Jr. Despite these setbacks, Hale and Smith have shown promising potential to make significant contributions.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins praised Smith for his size and ability to secure difficult catches. He also highlighted Hale's speed and skill in eluding defenders. Hale, a former five-star recruit, faced a severe knee injury that kept him out for the entire 2024 season but has since regained his playmaking abilities at SMU.
Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's SEC experience and toughness as valuable assets for the team's offensive strategy. Smith, who recorded over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns at East Carolina, is recognized for his aggressive playing style, aligning well with the Mustangs' approach to downfield passing.
With the season opener against Florida State on September 7 approaching, the team is focused on building chemistry and finalizing their depth chart.
