A performance review team from the Texas comptroller's office has finished its on-site evaluation of Prosper ISD, Comptroller Don Huffines announced Tuesday. Prosper is the first of the four districts in the review to get a visit.

According to the announcement, the team is now analyzing information gathered during last week's visit and plans to release a comprehensive review of district operations by the end of the year.

Huffines picked Prosper earlier this month along with the Austin, Barbers Hill and El Paso school districts. The review is meant to determine whether district spending complies with state law and goes to students, classrooms and teachers, in the agency's words, rather than to administrative growth or non-instructional bureaucracy.

Gov. Greg Abbott asked for it so lawmakers could weigh the findings before the Legislature convenes in January 2027.

"We will document wasteful or inappropriate spending wherever we find it and report our findings to the Legislature and the people of Texas," Huffines said in the release. He also asked anyone aware of suspicious activity involving Prosper or any other district to report it through the agency's online fraud and waste portal, and said the review would be carried out "professionally and transparently."

The announcement does not describe what the team examined while it was in Prosper, how long it stayed or whether it has reached any preliminary conclusions.

Questions about the selection

When the four districts were named Oct. 5, the comptroller's office did not answer questions about what criteria it used to choose them or what could be done with the findings, the Austin Current reported at the time. The outlet also noted that both Huffines, whom Abbott appointed after Huffines won the March Republican primary, and Abbott are on the ballot this fall.

On the state's own school finance rating, presented at the district's Oct. 19 board meeting, Prosper ISD received a score of 94 out of 100 and the top Superior Achievement designation under the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas, which is based on 2024-25 data.

Prosper ISD's website could not be reached Tuesday to check for a district statement on the visit.
